Q: Clean up hard drive

I come from a Windows world. I bought my first Mac, a mini, in June of last year. In September of last year, I bought a 15" MacBook Pro.

Windows comes with a disk cleanup utility. I know how to clear the cache in a browser. I just looked at the disk utility & it appears that Mavericks doesn't have a disk cleanup utility like Windows. I know that I can format the hard drive & reinstall Mavericks, but I don't want to resort to that if there's an alternative. Is there an app at the App Store or is there a 3rd-party app, preferably free, that I can use? Is there a Terminal command that will clean out the junk?

Keeping AppCleaner is totally your choice.

I was suggesting that you uninstall it as a test because I have seen enough times where it causes problems.

There are some applications that scatter their junk everywhere on the system. In such cases, the developer of those application provide an uninstaller to go out and find all their junk and get rid of it.

The vast majority of the rest of the applications keep things pretty much together so that dragging it to the Trash gets rid of it.

For there reason there is no need for any of the so called "cleanup" apps.

The idea of the new user account is a trouble shooting technique to see if the problem is in the system or the old user account. If you create a new account and it runs fast then you know that the system is OK and the problem is in the old account.

Right now, I only have an administrator account on both my mini & my MBP because I'm the only one that uses them. I can create a new account on the mini because that is the one that I use more. If the problem is the old administrator account, how do I delete the old administrator account after I create a new administrator account? Do I go to "Users & Groups" & create a new administrator account & then delete the old administrator account? What would cause the old account to slow down?

The new account is a troubleshooting technique only. Set up the new account and test. Once all this gets fixed/cleared out, then you can decide if you want to keep the account.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

    SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

    View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    HUH?

I think that I solved the problem. There were a bunch of apps running at startup. I stopped them & rebooted & it seems that it is faster. The Dock appeared faster after I rebooted. The icons on the Desktop appeared faster. Only time will tell.

I did read about deleting the caches & the preferences. Shall I try that? Is that safe to do? How do I do it?

I've had my mini for almost a year & I'm still learning about OS X.

Deleting caches and preferences as a matter of maintenance is usually worthless.

It has been my experience that only during the rare occurrences when they get corrupt is ever worthwhile to do that.
