doug, my recommendation is to use the computer. this will also allow you to get these into your itunes library safely.

I do not know of a app that will let you use the CCD and the usb. You could record to any of the many availble recording apps using the mic input - but in the end, you will have better control and enjoy the results better if managed on your computer.

But that USB connector is meant to connect cameras to the iPad to import photos, so there may not even be a protocol to import audio files that way.

I would honestly do it via computer. Use the tech you already own rather than spend money on a maybe.

The iPad is a great device, but there are some things it's just not optimized for.

If you want to try it, go for it. However videos are imported via the photos app and that only works for photos and videos that follow a very strict naming convention. The reason you get sound on a video is that it's all packaged as the .mp4, .m4v etc of the video file. The connection itself only sees photo and video files. It doesn't see documents and doesn't see audio files. Maybe there's an app out there that does.

one thing to bear in mind, in 2011 Apple changed the amount of power allocated to the port, and available to the camera connection kit (that's what you're seeing that has the USB in) so stuff that worked prior to that sometimes didn't work after.
