Q: iTunes 11.2 crashing

I just upgraded iTunes and OS X Mavericks to the latest versions (11.2 and 10.9.3 respectively). iTunes now crashes consistently (100%). It runs for about 10 seconds and then it's spinning beach ball time. I re-downloaded and re-installed iTunes 11.2 with the same results. I tried selecting another iTunes library (on my network attached server) on start-up and it does the same. Any suggestions?

This is the fix that finally worked for me when I called Apple Support and they walked me through the fix and sent me the instructions at the following link so I could fix it myself if it happens again.  Hope this helps you too.

Why doesn't Apple offer a revised version of 11.2 that removes the sync services folder for everyone?!?!  And, then post the fix on this discussion. Last time I checked, this is NOT rocket science.

I have found a very specific bug that is causing iTunes to crash since I upgraded to 11.2.1.

I tried to find a "report a bug" option under Apple Support with no luck. I did use the Provide Feedback option from within iTunes.

    I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch mid 2012, running OS X 10.9.3

I am in the list view of songs and have several columns that I edit. I click on the first field I want to edit and then I use the Tab key to move through the columns as I make edits. When I get to the last column if I use the Tab key iTunes closes, every time. Prior to 11.2.1 I could Tab from the last column and it would wrap back to the first editbale column for that song. If I make the edit in the last column and then just click on the next track in the list, the changes save and there are no issues.

It is specifically related to the Tab key function from the last column.

    Thanks!

Just upgraded to 11.2.2 on iTunes and now I get to see iTunes recognises my iPhone (didn't before) but still hangs.  So still not working properly and getting increasingly frustrated.

    Hi spyder683

Many thanks for your instructions below, they worked for me on my iMac

I am running Mavericks 10.9.3 and updated itunes to 11.2.0 and then experienced problems with itunes crashing, 11.2.2 didn't resolve the problem. I found iTunes worked fine if all my other devices (iphone, ipad, ipod) were turned off, as soon as I powered any one of them up and itunes detected them over wifi or USB itunes then froze with the dreaded colored ball spinning.

In Mavericks 10.9.3 the SyncServices folder is not visible going into the normal library/Application support folder, your instructions below took me to a different area in the system, or at least made these folders visible. Following your instructions I was able to locate and delete both SyncService & SyncServices folders and I launched iTunes again while my devices were powered up and the issue has gone. Bliss!!!

    Many Thanks

    Hi Culero,

The fix of deleting the SyncServices folder is for Mac systems. From your desktop / finder, click the "Go" menu at the top, then "Go to Folder ..." Paste this into the field: ~/Library/Application Support

The SyncServices folder should be in there. I had both a SyncService and a SyncServices folder. The second one should, when deleted, help with the problem you and I both had of iTunes freezing when an iOS device is plugged in.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for sharing this. That seems to have worked. ******** of Apple not to include in the script something as simple as deleting a directory on the upgrade packge... what are they doing at HQ?!?!?!?!?

I downgraded to iTunes 11.1 and am staying there for now (since it would be such a hassle to restore from a Time Capsule backup again).  The reason is that I do not see why deleting the SyncServices folder (with its "local") file inside, would change anything.  SyncServices is a required support file for iTunes syncing, and its "local" file is re-created and modified almost daily.

I think there is some other idiosyncracy at work here that makes that solution work and for the problem to ocur in the first place.  My wife had no problems with her 11.2 update on her 2009 iMac running the latest Mavericks update, but my MacBook Pro 15" Retina (SSD) really did not like it.

It might be helpful if folks identified their equipment to see if it has some hardware basis.
