Cursor position when replying in Mail

For as long as I can recall, the following cursor placement has been a problem with signatures in Apple Mail, but for all my searching and experimenting...I can't solve it. If I reply to a message, my cursor is placed immediately above the quoted text, without a space, which looks so stupid, not to mention it's grammatically incorrect. This image displays the (incorrect) way Mail does it now:

The following image displays the (correct) way Mail "should" do this:

Before anyone (justifiably) suggests to just add a RETURN in a blank signature, this will NOT stick in the saved signature, I've tried it at least a hundred times, and I just tried it again in Mail 7.3 that just released today. If I add even one character in the signature, it works, but I don't want a signature unless it's blank and has a RETURN in it that solves this issue. Surely, this can't be all that difficult to do? Have I just been missing something simple all these years? Thanks for any ideas.

Finally figured this out. If you add a signature and call it "Blank Line" and try to assign it to an email account while still in Preferences | Signatures - it will not work. But if you create this "Blank Line" signature for each email account, then exit Preferences, and then open Preferences again, you an assign the "Blank Line" signatures with the signature selector at the bottom of the page (that wouldn't work the first time).
