My wireless keyboard won't connect and I'm in the lock screen...

Please help!! My keyboards batteries died when the Mac was asleep. I changed the batters but now the Mac won't recognize the keyboard and I can't type in my password to get out of lock screen in order to check the Bluetooth settings. How can I fix this?? I have tried turning the Mac on and off several times with the keyboard powered on and off and nothing seems to work.

I had to end up plugging in a USB keyboard and it recognized it right away. Once out of the lock screen all I had to do is pair my wireless back to the mac. Note to self, always have a backup USB keyboard as well!!
