10.9.3 kills third monitor

The setup: 2 x 30" Cinema Displays connected via dual-port mini-DP to DVI adapters, connected to thunderbolt ports, and 50" TV connected to HDMI port, in new Mac Pro. All three monitors were working on 10.9.2, only one Cinema display and TV show up after update. Mac Pro has dual FireProD500 cards, 32 GB RAM, 12 cores.

Not sure if this is isolated to new Mac Pro's: older models with two mini-display ports and DVI to HDMI adapter may or may not still work.

Had to restore back to 10.9.2 to get all three monitors working again. Maybe they would work with mini-DP to DP cables? Not sure, have no way to test.

I just send this report to apple bug report:

I think I have narrowed the problem down! I just tried to test one monitor with the apple active mini display port to dual link a adapter. the process of going into sleep and waking up again (without the „out of range“ error) works without problems as long as there is enough time that the monitor fully goes to sleep. when i try to interrupt the „going into sleep“ mode with a press of a button, it get the error! so if i give the monitor a few seconds to complete the process, it’s fine. if i immediately stop the sleep mode on the first sign, i get the error! BUT ONLY WITH THE ACTIVE ADAPTER! the passive apple adapter working on all three monitors without a problem! and it’s not a defect with the one display because i also tried the active adapter on the other two display > same problem!

The displayed error "out of range" disappears, when i turn the monitors off and on again with the main power switch!

my configuration, in my opinion, is much more simple

Macmini - HDMI cable - TV (LED full HD)

on preferences, no sleeping for system, no sleeping for hard disk, no sleeeping for monitor, no sleeping at all, it is a server running don't need to have a rest.

It worked perfectely until 10.9.2, I could switch on and off or change the sources in my TV and I got always back my screen from the Macmini. After 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 DOESN'T WORK anymore, there is some tricks that i can do to get it back, as for example unplug the cable and plug it again, or access the Macmini with my MBP (Share Screen) then in the system Preferences - Display and I change from 1080p to 720p and then back to 1080p ... but this tricks are all b**ls***t, they work for one time, next time it will be dead again.

I went back to 10.9.2, which gave me about 24hours work to re-configure all in the server, even using backups, but it is running as it should. I will never update this Macmini, without doing some paralell tests. so, at the same time i created a smal partitition 20GB on my main harddrive, where I keep the last OSX version running and I can test if it works or not.

Wanted to let everybody know that as of 10.9.5, Apple has still yet to fix this bug. It's making my head explode. I have to restart my computer once a day. Intermittently, waking from sleep kills 3rd monitor.

I am so frustrated. Billions of dollars of talent and they can't seem to fix this despite bug report after bug repot. I am a power user and an Apple developer, not some casual user who bought their iMac from the mall to check email and download Selana Gomez tunes from iTunes. So sick of this.

It's very Microsoft-esque.

Check out this thread Jerry: Mac Pro (Late 2013) Dual monitors freeze on startup?

On Page 4 reported by Volt-Mac, he found an active adapter that is helpful. My Mac Pro has the startup freeze and monitor wake up problems for the last 3 months. I got one of these active adapters from Amazon. My MP's issues may take 7-10 days to show up. So far so good though....

keep away from the 10.9.5, they did not solve it yet.

but what it is strange is the 10.10 Beta 1, Beta 2 and Beta 3 are working perfectly 🙂 means we just have to way for the Yosemite release

i am keeping all my computers at 10.9.2 is the last one that worked without any problem, i just keep trying the updates with an external FW hard drive to keep myself out of troubles.

I am happy to report that my issues have disappeared in 10.10! I recall many of us including OP starting encountering issues with the new Mac Pro and for me these have disappeared.

I have four displays connected to the new Mac Pro. 2 HDMI Samsung displays connected with active adapters and 2 DVI Dell displays connected with active adapters. I'd be happy to change my monitors around to other configurations or try using passive adapters to see if I lose functionality to help others identify whether 10.10 would solve their issues as well. Good luck!

Did you have the active adapters when you had 10.9.x? I had a lot of problems with 10.9.3-10.9.5 when I did not have the active adapters. After getting the active adapters, my Mac Pro has been very reliable with 10.9.5.

Yes, with 10.9.2 I had the same four active Accell adapters. The moment I upgraded to 10.9.3 I could only use two out of the four monitors regardless of which of the six ports available on the Mac Pro. As someone who breathes the software lifecycle for a living, it clearly looked (and still does) like a regression introduced in software, specifically in 10.9.3. It was easy to find OP's identical issue since I could identify the exact moment my setup broke.

You will have what looks like problems when using passive adapters, it's certainly confusing. Active adapters are a must if you're driving a third DVI or HDMI display from one card. See Mac Pro (Late 2013): Using multiple displays and http://www.overclock.net/t/721931/active-vs-passive-displayport-adapters-the-tru th

for more on these topics.

But again, just in case it gets lost in the noise, for me - using four external displays (2 HDMI w/ active Accell adapters, 2 DVI w/ active Accell adapters) with 10.10 works.

Just upgraded to Yosemite and the 10.9.3 missing third display bug is back. Everything worked fine before the upgrade now it is just like ti was in 10.9.3. Odd thing is that I have three monitors, the new startup gauge appears on the left monitor but after startup the middle and right monitor work and the left monitor is black. Sometimes occasionally though the right monitor will be black and the left and middle monitor will work.

I have officially retired my apple fan boy hat....
