OSX 10.9.3 - After updating Youtube no longer works and Apple logo screen appears 3X before login screen

I've just updated to OSX 10.9.3 on a late 2013 rMBP 13". After updating I noticed Youtube videos no longer play and just sit on a black screen. (occurs on Chrome and Safari)

Also, on bootup and restart I noticed the grey Apple logo screen appears, then refreshes and re-appears again and refreshes before the login screen finally comes on.

Anyone else getting this? Solutions?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

kkwan77,

I don't know what your start-up screen problem might be - I've had glitches like that from time to time with new updates and I just live with them until the next OS X update - but I'm not having any of those login screen glitches with 10.9.3 (of course, I don't have the same MacBook Pro model as you).

But your YouTube problem - are you experiencing this problem only in Safari? Have you tried another browser such as Firefox? If you can't view YouTube videos in Safari, go to the Flash Player preference pane in System Preferences and check for an update... then make certain that your plug-in are enabled in Safari:

User uploaded file

If no joy with that, call back.

The issues occurs in both Safari and Chrome. I noticed that some videos do play on Youtube, e.g. the Vevo ones for music I tested work fine, but the user uploaded ones do not play and just load a black screen. Other videos from other sites seem ok, for instance videos from Yahoo! in some of their articles.

As for the startup thing, really strange...seems consistent though that it loads the logo screen 3X before login screen finally appear. My system is pretty vanilla in terms what's installed.

Check marks on all the boxes on that link.

Just noticed that the logo screen bug appears when I bootup/restart with the lid closed. I use 2 external monitors, and when the lid is open it boots to the login screen normally.

Very odd, hope they address this in the next patch.

Same here! I normally run in clamshell mode with an external monitor, and I only had the glitches on my external when in clamshell - no problems when my MBP was open.

I simply don't know the answer...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Well it seems that the Youtube resolved itself, just woke up and tested it and all videos play fine. Odd.

Anyhow, it's just the Apple logo problem that still occurs (when booting in clamshell mode - lid down) when applying the latest 10.9.3 patch.
