Q: Recently purchased iBook seems to be stalled at the download stage and I can't delete it to start again as the delete option is greyed out.

iBook appears to be paused at the download stage on iPad. Unable to complete download or delete however purchased book can be viewed and opened on synced iPhone.  Tried downloading a free book to push download through with no success. Any ideas on how to access the book on the iPad?

    Hi BSL4,

It sounds like you are stuck in the middle of a download for iBooks. You may have to delete the book and start over and it seems like you have tried to do so. When trying to delete the book did you use the steps in this article?

How to delete content you've downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5772

    Specifically -

    1. Tap the iBooks app.
    2. View your Purchased Books collection.
    3. Tap Edit.
    4. Tap any books you want to delete.
    5. Tap Delete.

Once you have deleted the book from your iPad you can download it again from the Cloud as mentioned in the article.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Best,

    Brett L

    Hey Brett,

I think I'm having the same problem as BSL4.  If I'm reading the issue right, the issue is the book is "downloading" on the iPad and as a result, it's greyed out and cannot be deleted.  I cannot swipe to delete, click edit an highlight to delete, etc.  Also, clicking the icon to stop the download in list view does nothing.

The books are fully viewwable and readable on the iPhone with a synced account.

I can tell you I've tried 1) deleting the ibooks app, 2) signing out of iTunes on the device, 3) hard resetting the device (holding power and home button) 4) switching wifi networks/eliminating any internet connection to force a failed download, and multiple combinations of the order of these steps to try to get something to happen, to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same here. Bought a book through iBooks on my desktop and it's fine. Started to download on my iPhone5 and is stalled. Greyed out, no way to delete it and start again. Even tried manually managing books in iTunes, but since this isn't completed, it doesn't see anything to sync. Annoying.

Also, tried deleting the app and reinstalling, and get the same thing: the progress circle comes up, but never moves. All my other books re-download fine, it's just seems to be this one purchase.

After working with tech support on an unrelated matter and restarting my iPhone (holding down power and home till the Apple came up), the book finally downloaded with no problem. So a good solid reset might work here.

My IPad is doing the same thing, I bought the second book in a series and it either will have a pause button on it and I tap it and it does nothing, or it has the downloading bar with out it downloading and I tap on it and it won't let me read it. My iPad has also sending me a message saying that each time I try to update it it has an error I have tried everything to get it to update and for my book to download and it won't. It is very frustrating and annoying...

I Just figured this out. I had downloaded a bunch of books on my iPhone and had the greyed-out issue on my iPad with sync collections enabled. Had tried all the same fixes as indicated in this thread and others without success. What worked was restarting my iPad (this may not be a necessary stage) and searching for the titles that were stuck In the iBooks store. As expected each showed an 'in progress' download button. I was finally able to tap this to stop the (non-existent) download, which hadn't been possible within 'My Books' or the 'Purchased' tab on the store. When I tapped the button briefly jumped to 'Read' then changed to the standard iCloud download button for a previous purchase. Tapping this successfully initiated the download, which then synced into the right collection in my library.

    Hope it works for you!

Merci beacoup, Dharma. Going to the iBooks store, stopping the stalled download and restarting has my book loaded in both my iPad and miPhone.

I put the books on my iPad in LIST MODE .....  then the ones stuck in downloading mode.... i slid the book sideways to the left and got a DELETE button ...deleted all the books stuck in downloading mode .....restarted my ipad..... and then when I restarted opened iBooks again and the "cloud" was there and I started downloading them ONE BY ONE....and it showed the download ring ....List mode the books seems to be a better way to manage the books ..

Had the same problem with 3 different books. What eventually worked for me was doing a search for the books at the bottom of the iBooks screen, and when they showed up under search I was able to "Get" and then download them again, this time successfully.

It worked for all of the books that were still available to download.  I have 1 book that I was updating that is no longer available to download.  Do you have any suggestions and what to do?
