ipod classic 3rd gen 20gb charging

Since a few days I have become the new owner of a 20gb iPod classic 3rd gen.

Yes, the one with the red lighted music buttons and with a scrollwheel on it.

This type of iPod is known for only charging by firewire cable+charger.
However, when I connect the iPod to my newer apple charger, the one that also charges iPhone 3gs (dock connector), it turns on while having an empty battery. There is no sign of battery charging, but it does work.

Could anyone please tell me if it will do harm to the iPod, when using it while being connected to a newer apple charger? (so not by firewire, but by the newer ones that also charge iphone 3g, 3gs, 4, 4s, etc).

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Harm

Dock connector stayed the same for all generaitons of iPod that used it. It won't do any harm to use a newer cable, but if you're plugging into the wall, it won't do anything positive either. If you plug the cable into your computer, as long as the iPod has the latest firmware, it will still sync over USB.

If it doesn't come up and sync, but you think you wold like that capability, you can find a Firewire-equipped computer to update it. It'll delete all of the contents, but you can re-sync back to your computer.
