May 16, 2014 3:01 PM in response to goodoldbobby Niel,There appears to be a problem with Find My Mac. Turning it off will stop the Users folder from disappearing upon restart.

May 16, 2014 3:13 PM in response to goodoldbobby Christian A. Burkert,hi there
no need to worry, that folder is not gone, it only turned invisible.
either click on Go at the menu at the top of your screen, select Go to Folder and enter /Users into the popup window. You will see a Finder window containing the User folder.
or open Terminal and enter "chflags nohidden /Users" (without the quotation marks). This needs to be done from an administrator account. This should make that folder visible again.

May 16, 2014 3:36 PM in response to Christian A. Burkertby peter_watt,All remedies need to be redone after restart including the tool linked above uness you turn off Find My Mac.
The permissions seem to be open to everyone too. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6224713?start=30&tstart=0
I am (for once) not updating til this is fixed.
Lots of similar threads.

May 16, 2014 3:39 PM in response to peter_wattby Christian A. Burkert,it's indeed the combination of iTunes 11.2 and the iCloud setting "Find My Mac"
If that setting is active, /Users is hidden. If it is inactive, /Users is visible. Strange, really strange...

May 16, 2014 3:53 PM in response to Christian A. Burkertby Kappy, open Terminal and enter "chflags nohidden /Users" (without the quotation marks).
This does not seem to work. Enabling Find My Mac causes the Users folder to disappear. However, I did not try a restart afterwards. Will give that a try.
A restart returned the Users folder. BTW, your command line needs to be preceeded with "sudo" to work: "sudo chflags nohidden /Users" after which you are prompted for your password which will not be echoed to the screen.

May 16, 2014 3:58 PM in response to Kappyby ssls6,Based on my own testing, Find my Mac causes the problem after reboot some but not on all Macs. I see this on a mid-2012 MBA and mid-2011 iMac. Funny enough a early 2011 MBP seems to be able to run Find my Mac and not have the problem. I have not tested a late 2009 iMac or mid-2012 MP.
So far, each actual home directory remains with the proper permissions and I've got very little reason to tunnel from the root down to my home, the sidebar is faster.
All things considered, I see this as a low impact bug and many won't notice it at all. What do people really do via finder and /Users other than pass through on their way to something more interesting. If you do have a notebook and want Find my Mac (I do), then consider just ignoring this bug until it's fixed. Finder preferences allow you to have your home folder always one click away.

May 16, 2014 3:59 PM in response to Kappyby Christian A. Burkert,Oops, you are right about the command line.
Since I usually use a root shell, I tend to forget that sudo can be helpful if root is not used directly

May 16, 2014 4:05 PM in response to sbermanby Kappy,As far as I can tell all it does is run the chflags command line. It does not appear to disable Find My Mac.

May 16, 2014 4:07 PM in response to ssls6by Kappy,I agee. The bug is really a non-event for most people. The rest of us already know what to do.
I am surprised this got past the engineers and all the testers (including myself.) But then I don't use Find My Mac, so I never would have seen it.

May 16, 2014 5:30 PM in response to goodoldbobby MajorIP4,Well this is causing iMovie import to fail trying to look for files in the /Users directory. It just spins in the lefthand pane. Try it and you'll see what I mean (for those who's /Users is hidden).

May 16, 2014 5:46 PM in response to MajorIP4by Barney-15E,I asked a similar question to Kappy's on another thread, but didn't get a response.
Your observations makes it obviously needed. While I could import from an external, I couldn't access my home folder or any of its subfolders.

May 16, 2014 6:02 PM in response to MajorIP4by Christian A. Burkert,Disabling Find My Mac under iCloud in System Preferences will make the /Users folder reappear and stay visible after reboot.
