Lost Ipad Lock mode.

My IPad was stolen and i used the find my iphone feature which only works if the ipad is online. I typically use a mi-fi or wi-fi. Can a person hack into the offline IPad and see notes and pictures, etc on the ipad even if lock mode was used? Or does lock mode only function once the ipad is online.

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 7

Do you remember if you enabled "Erase Data?" That function erases all daa after ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

I've never really investigated thoroughly but I don't believe that you can have it both ways - after an erasure, you can't track it.

If you set only a 4-digit passcode and you did not configure the auto-erase, a very patient thief can simply keep trying combinations and eventualy, he'll get in and get access to everything provided, of course, he does not connect to the 'net.

I use an 8-digit code and the beauty of "greater than four" is that a thief has no clue what the code length actually is. He doesn't know if he should try six digits, seven, digits, eight digits, weell you get the idea. Of course, the auto-erasure is your best bet.

THis is a long shot, but can an internet provider connect to the Ipad remotely so that it can lock or be erased or can apple do this remotely?

They probably can but they won't.

However, you can do it yourself. In fact, you can configure iCloud now so that the iPad will be instantly erased as soon as the thief connects to the Internet.

Right now, use your computer to go to www.icloud.com and log in with your Apple ID and password.

Click on "Find my iPhone."

Click on "All Devices."

Click on your iPad.

Click on "Erase iPad."

You asked if the ISP or Apple could do it remotely. Obviously, whatever they can do relies on access via the Internet and therefore nothing can be done until the iPad is connected to the 'net. If you can't talk to the device, you can't make it do anything. Duh!

However, YOU can enable the command NOW in iCloud. iCloud will store that command so that, whenever the thief connects to the 'net (today, tomorrow or next year), the iPad will be instantly erased. That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you use MiFi to connect.
