4K monitor not working with 10.9.3

Hi,

I installed Mac OSX 10.9.3 in my Early 2011-13inch MacBook Pro.

When I connect the 4K monitor from Samsung - U28D590D, via DisplayPort, it seems that Monitor/MacBook Pro detect the connection,

but the OS itself is frozen till I disconnect the DP cable. connecting via HDMI doesn't hang but with only 1080p resolution (as expected by the HDMI spec).

I guess I need to submit a bug report, but wonder if anybody has the experience with 4K monitor with 10.9.3 via DP port.

Thanks,

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

Hi, Christian,

I already read 10.9.3 release note that it only mentions those H/Ws.

and I know that the Thunderbolt Gen1 doesn't support 4K at 60Hz.

but it should support 4K at 30Hz or 1440p, 1080p at 60Hz according to the specification.

The problem is that it hogs the cpu resources and make OS frozen once I connect a DP cable to the monitor.

I have no problem with HDMI cable connection and can use this monitor at 1080p.

I believe OS shouldn't be frozen when it is connected to a monitor (regardless 4K monitor, 1440p monitor, 1080p monitor).

And I think the Mac OSX must support 4K at 30Hz or 1440p at 60Hz, as MS Windows and Linux OS support those resolutions.

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro and am using it with the Samsung U28D590D monitor running in full 4K.

You need to buy an Active DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and download SwitchResX for it to work. Hook up the adapter, set the resolution in SwitchResX to 3840x2160 at 24Hz, and then (this part is key!!) close your laptop!!! With my Macbook Pro open I was not running anywhere near 4k.. I accidentally shut the screen while messing with the cord and it automatically switched the resolution to full 4k! I will put the links to the two products below.

Hope this helps!
