winmail.dat ?

I got and email from a windoz friend with a "winmail.dat" attacthment and it was opened by GraphicConverter which brought up a bunch of code. When I did a command I it opened a window showing all my mail on my server.
Is this a virus?
I asked apple support and they are supposed to be checking it out.
