Q: Why constant request for mail passwords?

Why am I constantly being asked for passwords to my various Mail accounts. The passwords are in the Account preferences. When I try to send a message, often a window will scroll down asking for my password, but the password (in dots) is already there and I just have to click OK and then it sends the message. Makes me a bit crazy.
