Looking for users of Qwest DSL and Qwest.net

I am considering getting Qwest DSL and Qwest.net ISP service but am concerned about Mac support. I'm trying to find out if the installation CDs from Qwest will set up the DSL modem and also my Mail settings, or do I have to do a lot of manual settings? The Qwest support personnel I've spoken with don't give me any confidence about this - so I'm trying to find some real Mac users with experience. Also, I'm trying to determine if the basic 256Kbps service will be okay for mainly email and web surfing. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with experience in this area also. Thanks.

When I had Qwest DSL and Qwest.net internet service a couple years ago, I don't think there was anything too complicated about setting up the modem. The most difficult thing was putting the filters on all the phone lines and making sure they were installed in the right direction. In the Mac Network System Preferences, use built-in Ethernet and DHCP in TCP/IP. For completeness sake, you can enter the DNS Server addresses but they aren't necessary. I did have more problems with technical support with Qwest DSL than Time Warner Cable, but that's another issue.

I had Qwest DSL years ago in Denver. You don't need the installation CD. Don't put it in your computer. It will just install old software you don't want or need.

Does Qwest use PPPoE now? They didn't used to but it wouldn't surprise me if they do now. Still, that is not a big deal anymore. All you have to do is plug the Ethernet cable from your Mac to the DSL router and it should connect automatically. If, by chance, Qwest is using PPPoE, they will give you a DSL account id and password. The account id won't be your e-mail or anything. It will be as much gibberish as the password.

Once you have the PPPoE account id and password, just follow Apple's instructions.

You will have to decide if 256K is good enough. You can upgrade it at any time if you want. It will be fine for e-mail and casual web surfing. Big downloads, video, or iChat probably won't work very well.
