Q: Iphoto won't open thumbnails

I took my '09 macbook to shop -- it was running extrememly slow with color wheel all the time I tried to do anything from browsing web to email and I couldn't get it to restore from time capsule. When I got it back I noticed that the updates that I had not done were done. (I only do security updates - why fix something that's not broken and wanted to save hd space)  ilife was updated (which I recently found out has new iphoto in it). Now iphoto opens but photos do not load from thumbnails. So far from what I've read here, I have done the cmd/opt hold while opening iphoto, chose 4th and 5th options. I've tried to restore from time capsule. I've tried to reinstall from app cd that came with computer. None of those things worked. I've downloaded iphoto library manager, tried to follow those instructions, but they didn't fit what I had on my screen. Please help. It's so frustrating to get a machine back from (apple certified) shop with new problems. I'd really really rather not have to buy iphoto. I'm also confused because iphoto info says iphoto 9 v 8.1.2  If I can't get iphoto to work, I'm perfectly happy viewing them from the library manager. But then I'd want to delete any duplicates of pics that may remain for (the malfunctioning) iphoto to use. I was originally trying to delete photos that I don't want from iphoto because I have a new macbook air that I want to transfer everything to, but that hard drive is only 128gb (only! haha) and this macbook already has 102 gb on it, so I wanted to delete unwanted things before I made the transfer. Thank you. Alice

"Swtich to another User Account on your Mac and make a library there. Try import a couple of these shots there. Does that work?"

To make it short. Nope. It didn't work. (details how I did it are below, if that helps.)

    What is cymk?

If you mean the new .jpg from my email which I tried to open with iphoto, it was just from my mom, who's not doing anything different and they always worked before.

If you mean the rest of the photos I've been trying to open from the thumbnails, they're from my iphone.

I don't know what greyscale is either, unless it just means b&w. (all the photos are in color)

I'm the only user on this computer. I just made a new user account. I figured out how to switch users without logging out each time.

I went to the new user's iphoto, tried to import a photo from the old user. The pictures folder had a red thing on the icon which apparently means I can't access it from new user. But I did have some regular pictures in another folder and guess what. I got the same message. "unreadable files" "unrecognizable format".

Can I delete that new user account now? :-)

(I hope you guys are finding this as more of a challange then a pain...)

Yes you can delete the new account now.

I think you need to reinstall your Operating System.

    What is cymk?

It's a 4 color printing mode, cyan, yellow, magenta and black.

At the shop, (when I brought it in because after I tried to restore from time capsule because it kept freezing, and I kept getting "you must restart your computer" over and over)  he reinstalled it, chose "archive" files or something, and all my stuff was back and my computer seemed to be working fine.

But one of the things I noticed when I got back home was that the updates had been installed. (including, I'm pretty sure, ilife, which I thought had an update from iphoto in it)  They always do that and it infuriates me. I don't need to fill my hard drive with updates to apps I never use...

Then I tried to use iphoto and it didn't work.

Maybe I should bring it back to them and see if they'll fix it for free, since they updated things that I didn't want updated.

Hasn't that been known to cause problems? After updating things that ran fine, they then are broken? But maybe it's my fault since I didn't tell them to not update it.

Any other suggestions before I give up?

I don't need to fill my hard drive with updates to apps I never use...

If you have those apps on your hard driver having them updated won't take up any more space.  If you  want to avoid those automatic updates then turn off automatic updates in the System/App Store preference pane.  Then check the App Store yourself on occasion for updates you want to apply.

I've always had automatic updates turned off and check once in a while for security updates.

When I took it to the shop, I neglected to tell them not to download and install the updates.

I'm curious, though. You say it doesn't take up more space, but when I click on "show details" in the software updates available window it tells you the space you need for that update. Sometimes, such as with itunes, it's alomst a gb. Now I have a new itunes that I have to relearn how to use. It's just frustrating that they can't ever leave anything alone. You get used to how something works, then you have to learn it all over again. It's a pain.

    Thanks for the cymk info.

I guess it's time to give up on iphoto.

    Thanks for trying.

The size of the update isn't added on to the existing app. A 100mb app with a 50mb update won't become 150mb, it will remain about the same size as the update will replace material in the app, that is remove some and add new instead of that which is removed.
