Q: 4s shuts off randomly, shows charge symbol but not low battery!

For the last 6months my 4s has been randomly turning off at various battery amounts. 65%, 32%, etc. shows charge symbol. I have to hold power, home, volume up buttons over and over and eventually it will turn back on showing plenty of charge!? Have noticed it is more frequent if I am taking a picture or video but it is extremely inconvenient to say the least. Sometimes my keys are slow too. I have tried running it to 1%, and fully recharging but it didn't stop the shutting down issues. My phone does this EVERYDAY and my families' 4, and 4s rarely have issues. Have latest software, backup regularly. I hear this from a LOT of 4s owners and they are all leaving apple. I don't want to... But this is a ridiculous issue that people can't just send in out of warranty phones for days to get checked out? Any options or ideas?? I need my phone daily. :(

    Hi Freebird222,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that your iPhone 4s is having an issue where it is sporadically shutting down even though it has a charge. It sounds like you have done some great troubleshooting already by resetting the iPhone and letting the battery run completely down. There are a few more steps that I would recommend which are in the following article.

    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802

Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off

    1. Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
    2. Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
    3. Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
    4. After at least 30 minutes, if:
      • The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
      • The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
      • Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
    5. If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
      • If the display turns on, go to step 4.
      • If the display remains black, go to next step.
    6. Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
    7. If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

    I hope this helps,

    -Joe

Doesn't really seem to address my issue? All buttons function, iphone will turn back on instantly 100% of the time if charger is plugged in for even a second and will show charge it was at when it shut off for NO REASON. 95% of the time it will turn back on by pushing power+home+volume up buttons repeatedly. It did it today while sending a text at 49% charge. I'm really starting to hate this phone! No corrosion or any damage - it's always fine w/ iTunes too. Husbands phone starting to do the same. It's gotta be software???

    Hey Freebird222,

I agree that it could be a software issue. The steps I posted above are specific to if an iPhone is unexpectedly powering off. To completely isolate software versus hardware, you would want to perform a restore as number 6 suggests in the above article. If you restore the iPhone and set it up as new and the issue continues, it may be necessary to contact Apple support.

    Thanks for reaching out,

    -Joe

I'm going to try restoring - thanks- this is very annoying. Shutting off so randomly is very inconvenient to say the least
