A circa 2003 iMac can be updated to Mac OS X 10.5.8 "Leopard", no later. If that is what is already installed, you're there.
To determine which Mac you have, what kind of CPU it uses, which version of OS X it's using, and how much memory is installed: > About This Mac
iOS 6 and later won't sync with pre-2006 Macs.
If you have already installed iOS 6, you'll need a newer Mac to sync with it, and probably exchange it for a device that has iOS 5.1.1 or earlier on it. http://www.gazelle.com/ is a good place to get resale value on a device purchased after the return/exchange period has expired at the store.
