I have lost most of my contacts on my iPad and the names and pictures are missing from messenger

My contacts are all still on my iMac but not on iPad Air. Tried syncing and resetting iPad. Also in messenger I am only seeing numbers not peoples names and photos. How can I get them back??

Did you turn off iCloud by any chance? Settings > iCloud
