Monitor not waking up after 10.9.3 update

Hi,

I am using the Mac Pro 2013 and have run into some monitor issues after updating to 10.9.3

I am using a dual monitor setup, the SamsungA950 and the Eizo CG275W. Ever since the 10.9.3 update, the Eizo monitor will not wake when the display goes to sleep and I try to wake the computer up.

I know the computer is still running as the other monitor comes up and I can see the mouse cursor. I have to physically unplug the Eizo monitor from the Mac Pro and then replugging it before it will appear after a while.

This issue did not occur before the 10.9.3 update. Anyone sees this with other monitors too?

iPhone 5, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), 12core 2.7Ghz, 64GB RAM Dual D700

Has anyone tried to see if this bug exists in Yosemite? I am on 10.9.4 and I still get this issue when the monitors sleep. I have it set so my mac mini never sleeps but the monitors do sleep and about 10% of the time I can't get them back on and have to hold down the power button and do a cold restart. Sometimes I can login with ARD, but not always.

Jeff,

Apple has a tool to collect logs from your computer. A good way to proceed is contacting AppleCare and then escalate to talk to a Sr. Advisor. Then ask the Sr. Advisor to report the issues to Apple Engineering. Then they will give you the tool to collect logs. This will greatly help Apple Engineering fix the issues.

I did that when I was running 10.9.3 on my Mac Pro. Apple Engineering gave me a tool to collect logs on my Mac Pro. They used these logs to analyze the issues. Then they came up with 10.9.4 which was supposed to address the issues. See 10.9.4 Release Notes from Apple. I have to say that 10.9.4 is an improvement from 10.9.3. But it does not completely fix the bugs.

Earlier this year (2014), I had a new MacBook Air running 10.9.2 that crashed regularly. Apple took it back and gave me a new one. The new one crashed regularly just like the previous one. So I got the Sr. Advisor to work with Apple Engineering. They gave me a tool to collect logs. Then the Sr. Advisor told me that according to these logs, my MacBook Air had similar problem with a batch of bad MBAs in 2013. They then came out 10.9.3 to address the crash issues. Interestingly, Apple Engineering still wanted me to give them my MacBook Air so they can verify future releases. They offered to give me another brand new MBA. I just told them no.

Does your monitor wake-up problem occur with one or two monitors? Apple's Engineering asked me to test my Mac Pro with just one monitor. According to them, a few of us are still having the problem, and they want more info from us.

So I unplugged one monitor from the Mac Pro tonight. I'll keep it with just one monitor for a week and will let Apple know then.

Hi

I just want to add my voice to this thread. My 3 day old Mac Pro is exhibiting these same sleep issues with my Dual monitor setup. Very annoying! So far unplugging the monitor that doesn't get a signal after wake solves the problem.

Are people having these sleep issues with all specs of Mac Pro? Mine is the default Six Core with the Twin D500's running 10.9.4

Thanks

Hi

Ok I just tried something when waking the Mac Pro from an all night sleep. Before turning on my 2 monitors I entered my password and pressed enter and then waited another few seconds. Then I turned my monitors on and they both came on ok. This is the first time in the 4 days since buying the mac pro that my monitors both came on without having to unplug one. I had the idea last night and it worked after putting the mac to sleep for around an hour but I wanted to try it after an all night sleep to check it wasn't coincidence before reporting here. My theory was that maybe the thunderbolt port drivers needed time to wake up and get up to speed! I know I'm not very technical! 😉

In an unrelated issue (I think) I am having problems with a external thunderbolt raid hard drive causing my Mac Pro to crash on start up. I contact the venders tech support. They replied and one thing they suggested was updating to 10.9.4 using the combo updater instead of the software update method as they said "This is the only way to verify/repair/fix any OSX built-in driver, including the Thunderbolt driver." I haven't tried this as I can't afford the downtime yet so can't confirm it worked. Could this be part for the issue for some?

i unplugged everything apart from the 2 monitors and tried booting the Mac Pro taking each external device one at a time including a USB 3 card reader, usb3 external hd, and a USB 2 hub and of course the Thunderbolt HD raid. All passed except the TB HD raid. I suppose one of the monitors may have caused the crash when combined with the TB HD raid but I haven't test that yet.

I have two Apple HD Cinema Displays that crash my new Mac Pro on startup or on restart on OS X.9.4. This is my second Mac Pro replacement with no other workaround than to use one monitor at a time(!)

In Steve's words: "Somehow we managed to build a word processor that doesn't have fonts. This can't happen again. So fix it!"

Thats telling if you are having problems with Apples own cinema displays. It suggests there is a software driver issue in the Mac Pro.

Well I just tried unplugging one monitor to recreate the crash I described in my pervious posts and this time the TB raid HD wasn't the culprit! It was my USB 3 hard drive... once. Then I tried again and the mac pro boot perfectly with all devices and monitors pluggged in!!

TBh the crashing on boot up / restart isnt an issue for me as I haven't shut down a Mac in nearly 10 years! At the end of the day I put them to sleep. Unfortunately the one monitor not coming on upon wake from sleep is annoying. I'm now trying plugging the offending monitor in to a different TB port as it may be on a different bus. I'll check in the morning.

If that fails I might try updating to 10.9.4 using the combo update rather than the software update method that I used. As I was told by a tech help agent the combo updater will verify/repair/fix the thunderbolt driver.

I think I may have found part of the problem with OS X.9.x

When connecting a single display to thunderbolt port 1, the Monitor Preference pane shows it as Cinema HD; however, when I connect a second display to thunderbolt port 2, the primary display becomes Cinema HD (2) and the secondary display becomes Cinema HD (1). This doesn't make sense as the primary display should always be shown as Cinema HD (1) and the secondary display as Cinema HD (2).

I am about to report back to Apple Engineering team regarding the finding with just one monitor connected to nMP. They requested that I use just one monitor and see if I still have the wake up from sleep problem for that monitor. After 5 days of experimenting, this monitor wakes up normally. This is the monitor that has wake up problem when both monitors are connected.

I plan to report my findings tomorrow. Has anyone had monitor wake up problem with just one monitor?
