Setting Up Ipads for Office Use..

Hello,

I would appreciate some imput from users who have experience setting up ipads for use at work.
For instance I have 9 Ipads that I want my team to use in the field. Ideally I would like to set these up so that

members of my team can "check one out" and use it. While Using it I would like them to have only access to their information/Apple ID.

I've never attemped to log out on an ipad. If I logged in with a seperate ID would I still see apps/music purchased with the original ID? Is there a way to partition Hard drive space or is it just used up first come-first served? There is a lot of personal information stored on an ipad between imessages/email/billing information. Advice on managing privacy is also a primary concern I have.

Anything reccomended for setting up multiple users would be highly appreciated. Unfortunately I do not have much time to do much testing myself.

Thanks,

J

A couple of thoughts, and some questions. First, since it sounds like these devices will be shared, and not mapped to a specific user, you shouldn't have the users put any personal content on them. To do so would lead to confusion. I would set each of the devices up with a unique "company" iTunes account, each controlled by you. This will allow you to maintain licensing compliance for apps etc. you need to install.

You mention personal information.....specifically what personal information will be placed on the devices? Should the company information on them be accessible to all of the users? Do you want to place personal email on the devices? If personal information or personal email is to be placed on the iPads, you probably don't want to use a shared model. .

The apple store works on a country basis. You could configure all the devices in the US. You could download an app not avail in another country.

You need to be aware of the activation lock. It is set up for home users.

Activation lock

Find My iPad

"With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. It starts working the moment you turn on Find My iPhone in iOS 7."

When you use an MDM with restrictions, the MDM controls the device and nulifies the activation lock.

Personal input/use can be avoided. Concern came up when I initially logged into a Company Ipad with my pre-existing ID and the company Ipad quickly flooded with imessages etc. I have since made a new ID with my company information.

I like the idea of being able to controll company Apple ID's but I do not know how exactly to set that up.
Currently I would plan to have my team create an Apple ID using their company email, but then they are basically in charge of their account same as if it was their personal ID.

I wonder if setting up a single ID could work - since things like imessage/facetime/etc will be not be engaged. I however do need my team to login with specific apps with unique app IDs. I assume the team would have to manually sign out of these work related apps.

I should mention for context that I am not the company Owner. Rather working in a very large company trying to innovate the use of Ipads for specific field use. The company's IT department will not be engaged for this effort as the resources are unique since this is an international project.

I sincerely appreciate your responses and time.

Have a Good day.

The iPad is design as a single user or single task device. It's not designed to be shared among users doing different tasks. An example of a single task would be order taking at a restaurant.

You could use the cloud for all shared tasks. You would have to ensure the user logged out of the cloud before turning over the ipad. example, use a web based email system like gmail.

Early on, Apple prompted the idea of checking in and out ipads from a server. The users ipad would be backed up to an apple server and the next users stuff would be downloaded to the ipad.

You can't log in or out of an iOS device

You can only sign out or in the App Store

All configured setting, email, VPN iMessage, apps etc are still accessible by anyone who has access to the device

iOS is not a multi user os

However you can use it in a multi user environment as long as you keep the limitations in mind

and plan accordingly.

Use Apple Configurator and a MDM solution to manage the devices

Don't allow users to configure find my iPhone with their own or unknown iTunes account

or you"l find yourself locked out of the devices. iOS 7 now includes activation lock

Which is assigned to the first account that is used to configure iCloud find my iPhone

Have a look at VPP

And if your in a country that supports it DEP

Since this is to be a global deployment, you might be better off using each locations IT department to setup/ manage the devices as the App Store can have different apps n different countries not all apps are distributed world wide

the App Store has country locations and differing requirements,

Proof of address, local credit card etc. differing t&c
