This is an odd one. I have a little gray dot. It is not a dead pixel but looks like it. It is not on the surface, but somehow under the LCD and maybe between the LCD and backlight. It a appeared a few weeks after I got the MBP 17. The size is sort of like this asterisk: * . In the center it is darker and toward the edge it blends. Sort of fuzzy. Tried tapping cleaning, starring intently, to no avail. Any ideas?
Just an fyi, I had a week 24 mpb that had the same issue. I went to my local apple store to have a genius take a look at it. I got it sent in to have the lcd and main logic board replaced. The genius didn't seem to think that the gray dots on my screen were unusual but he agreed to send it in anyway. The genius called it an anomaly. Apple was going to replace the screen but they were unable to find a replacement lcd. After about 2+ weeks without my mbp, Apple replaced my mbp. This is my second replacement machine. I now have a week 35 and so far it's perfect.
I had the exact same "dot" on my old MacBook. It was very annoying. I'm not sure there's much you can do about it though; I think it's just a defect in screen.
Do you have a glossy or matte dislplay? The issue could be isolated to the new glossy displays on MB's and MBP's.
I have the same problem on my 15.4 MBP. It is so annoying as I cant remove it. It's just another thing on the disappointing list of MBP defects. My MBP works ok and I can't send it back for repair due to long repair time here in UK we need to send it to Amsterdam for repair. I spoke with apple about gray spot problem and they didn't know the cause of it.
Good luck and enjoy your MBP
A big question then is that if this is mold, is it covered under the warrantee? Seems to me that there should be no way for mold to form. Also, since this is covering an area more than about 4x4 pixels, is this enough to get a new screen?
I had 4 such astrix sized spots on my Macbook Pro LCD - took it in to the Apple store and they replaced my screen (no questions asked). I am surprised to hear that it could be mold...
I think I will keep the laptop away from the sink in the living room 🙂.
It is the normal screen, not glossy. Glossy screens make my eyes cross because of the glare. My eyes are crossed now with the gray dot, so it can go either way I guess.
I've got the same on my screen but i've got like 15 or so of those black dots. It seems to be mould or something that forms between the LCD screen itself and the protective screen.
i don't know if this helps (actually i know it dosn't) but i have the same dot on my razr phone, really annoying because the dot is about the size of an O.
