what about the 11.3 update that was just released?  I am not going to install it unless it fixes the DEP issue.

Well somebody that has the DEP issue will have to try or you won't find out. Might as well be you.

I've already upgraded without issues, but I've never had the problem so I can't help.

    Hi lindamhc,

A BIG NO is the answer to your question. The DEP is still present with the latest update.

    This worked for me:

    Open Command Prompt as Admin...

    Paste the following:

    bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

    Click RETURN.

...can setback to on by pasting

    bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn

Please note that grigby2152's suggestion to edit the Windows boot configuration data store (bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff) will completely disable the Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) security feature in Vista, as noted here in the My Digital Life article.  This might be a workaround for preventing the DEP error when iTunes v. 11.2.x or 11.3.x are closed on computers running Vista, but disabling DEP could also allow malicious code to take advantage of exception-handling mechanisms in Windows.

I recently updated (and have been using) a family member's iTunes installation on a PC running Vista.  I see the DEP error report on quitting iTunes.  However, its not something I'm going to worry about - firstly because iTunes works fine apart from this one issue, and secondly because the issue seems to be localized to Vista - iTunes 11.2 and 11.3 work fine and don't exhibit this issue on more recent Windows versions (I have it running on Win7 and Win8.1).

Vista has such a bad reputation ("second worst version of Windows, ever") that a minor incompatibility is as likely to be a Microsoft issue as it is Apple's.  Is it in Apple's or Microsoft's interest to continue to support this outdated OS for much longer?

My advice to the owner of this particular machine is to upgrade it to Win 8.1 if the hardware will support it, and if not to buy a new PC.

Thanks for the heads up Imacri, I was not sure what this command would do and have not tried it.

Seeing as it doesn't solve the problem im not going to either.

Thanks also to grigby2152 for the work around and taking the time to let us know. But seeing as the DEP is not really causing a problem using iTunes or anything else it doesn't seem worth disabling an important security function.

Still awaiting a reply from Apple support, if I don't hear anything this week I will contact them next week.

Ive had 6 years trouble free use using Vista and this little blip only occured straight after iTunes updated to the 11.2 and onward. I noticed a thread earlier here that since the latest iTunes update a days or so ago iTunes has stopped working on Windows 8.1???

I have had Vista from the beginning and I also have 7 as well now. There are things I like about Vista that I don't like about 7. Most are minor but the fact that the default picture save is .png on 7 but .jpg on Vista annoys me - and the default can't be changed. (Microsoft did not consult me in advance)

Not to fork this subject but as an aside I am disappointed that Apple has given up supporting Safari on Windows. I sure wish Microsoft and Apple could get together on these two matters to nail them down.

I have successfully reverted to iTunes 11.0.5.5 dated 8/16/2013, downloaded from oldapps.com. No more DEP notifications on my 32-bit Vista system! (BTW this was after the latest iTunes update and Vista security patches were found to make no difference.) It was a piece of cake for me, because it so happens that I haven't made any purchases at the iTunes store in over a year. I had added some other music files, but they were easily added back via Add Folder to Library under the File menu. However I do not know what complications might arise if your restored iTunes Library file does not list all of your purchases at the iTunes Store. You can of course find the date of your last purchase by logging in at the store.

Tip: Before downloading an old version you need to check the Date modified of the backups in your Previous iTunes Libraries folder. There's probably a good list of iTunes versions with release dates somewhere at Apple Support Communities, but I'm a newcomer and relied on the Wikipedia article "iTunes Version History." Your most recent backup is probably newer than this thread, and therefore no good for purposes of installing a DEP-compatible version.

In regards to Johnny DEP's comments about downgrading iTunes:

Turingtest2's support article here titled Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates includes instructions for downgrading iTunes (scroll down to the section titled Further Information).  Those instructions include the following warning:

"The 11.1.5 to 11.2 update for example also modified the database. In order to roll back to an older version of iTunes when this has happened you will also need to restore the pre-update library as described here."

Sorry, I should have mentioned the following in my previous post:

Please note that iTunes v. 11.1.4 patched a critical security hole for Man-in-the-Middle attacks - see APPLE-SA-2014-01-22-1.  According to my notes the v. 11.1.4 update caused all sorts of grief on my computer (I received an error "This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.DLL was not found" - see TSS536 for more info) so if you decide to downgrade to avoid the DEP error the safest option might be to use the v. 11.1.5 installer. If I remember correctly, v. 11.1.5 is the last version of iTunes I had on my computer that did not have the DEP error on shutdown.

Hi Imacri, your posts are always very informative. Thanks for pointing out the security patch that I now lack. I'll try to remember not to open iTunes Tutorials until a DEP-compatible update becomes available. I certainly would not recommend downgrading for everyone with this issue, nor did I mean to suggest that v. 11.0.5.5 was the right choice for everyone. I chose that version after looking at the "date modified" of the recent backups in my Previous iTunes Libraries folder. (I'm not talking about the date in the filename, which might be the date it was replaced as iTunes Library.itl.)

11.1.5 would probably be a better choice, but only if a 32-bit Vista user has a library backup with a date modified that falls between the release of 11.1.5 (Feb 26) and 11.2.0 (May 15). Unfortunately my most recent backup was too new, and the second-newest was much older. Another thing: NonnoAl stated at the top of page 4, "I had the same problem on my 64 bit Vista system when I was on iTunes 11.1."

I will certainly not buy a new OS in order to improve compatibility with recent versions of one free app!  If Apple continues to call this app "iTunes for Windows" then it should be compatible with the security features in all Windows versions that Microsoft still supports. It's not like I'm still running XP!

Just read the rest of Imacri's security patch link. Sounds like I should also avoid the iTunes Store. Too bad - for Apple!
