iPod classic not recognized after Mavericks update 5/17/2014

After the update on May 17th to Mavericks and to iTunes, my iPod classic is not recognized by my Macbook. This has never ever been a problem until the update. It will charge the device, but neither Finder or iTunes will even acknowledge it. Even if I put it in disk mode, disk utility does not see it.

I have reset the device several times.

What's going on?
