mail all messed up. can I go back to factory settings?

My apple mail has not worked for years. It get transferred from mac to mac and never really works. Can I somehow delete and start over, or revert to factory settings, something like that?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)
