I am looking for a reliable way (ie safe) to transform pmd files into doc (or docx) files for use in Word for Mac. Thanks for any help.

You may want to post that in the MS Office for Mac forums located on Microsoft's website.
In Word: File > Open
from the Enable dropdown list select; Recover Text from Any File
