Mail Application-I'm receiving failure notices on emails which I did not send. ???

I recently did software update to Maverick. Suddenly noticed emails coming in as failure notices - advising me my email to some of my contacts was not successfully delivered. I did not send any emails of the such.....and they look very suspicious......starting off with something like "Hi" or "Hey" with a link to click.

Someone is using my email address to send these bogus emails to my contacts. How did this happen? and what should I do? I don't want everyone in my contacts to receive these and mistakenly open and it be a virus or something. These do not appear in my SENT folder. Help!!!

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

As you guessed, someone else is using your email address. There is nothing at all you can do about this unfortunately.

This could be due to someone faking your address as the sender when sending spam. In this case, there's nothing to be done.

However, it could also be due to someone hacking your e-mail account. The fact that you don't see the messages in your Sent mailbox does not necessarily mean anything, since hackers have been known to delete any messages they sent from the Sent mailbox. You need to immediately change your e-mail password to be sure the account is secure.

In addition, some e-mail accounts provide features that make it easy for hackers to create a "back door" to get back in even after you change the password. Case in point, GMail's account delegation. Check with your e-mail provider and make sure no such feature is being abused by hackers.

I thank everyone here for their expertise and input. The information I have gained from you has been most helpful.

Just to keep you apprised, I changed the security password to my email account, and am pleased to report that after a day, failure notices have ceased. Hopefully this will ward them off. I just hope none of my contacts fall victim to this malicious effort of whomever is responsible for this injustice. I have had my mac for 8 years now and have never had an issue such as this. Guess even the mac users need to beware now. Thank you all once again for your helpful support and speedy replies.
