You can only connect to one device of each type at a time. I regularly have my iPad connected to a BT keyboard and BT speakers at the same time. I could not, however, pair it to two different BT speakers. My phone is generally connected to multiple things as well (Pebble watch, Jawbone UP and speakers or a headset).

I have about a dozen things paired at any given time.

When it comes to BLE here are the rules:

A master (or Central) is the BLE device that initiates an outgoing connection request to a peripheral device, for example: a phone, tablet, or computer.

A slave (or Peripheral) is the BLE device which connects to a master (or central) device. For example: a BLE RFID reader, such as the idChamp RS3 RFID reader.

A slave can only be connected to one master, but a master can be connected to multiple slaves. In a smartwatch example, your iPhone can theoretically connect to multiple smartwatches at the same time. However, your smartwatch can only ever connect to one smartphone at a time.

There is no limit in the Bluetooth SIG on the number of slaves a master can connect to. Generally this will be limited by the BLE technology or Bluetooth stack you use.
