Persistent Admin Login Dialog

Great forum you guys have here, but I am having trouble tracking down the cause of my current issue with existing posts. Most of what I find is not relavent to our situation in the least. So I'm hoping someone has seen this, or at least knows where to start...

System: Mac Mini (OSx10.6.8)

Issue: We are running LDAP, thus authenticating users at login against the server. We can authenticate properly, and all works just fine, but multiple times a day we get a dialog that is asking for the Admin Password? It usually happens at initial login, and then 3-8 times between 8am and 5pm. No real pattern in my eyes. You can either put in the admin credential, or cancel, neither has any apparent effect. The real funny part is, not everyone is experiencing this? Only users that have been added to the server after a certain date, and nobody can tell why, or what was significant about the timeframe.

The "Details" of the dialog are:

Right: system.volume.mount

Application: SystemUIServer

The logs from the same timeframe give me similar information, but I'm by far not a Mac guy, and can't get any real info from googling around with random statements. Most of what I find is stuff talking about running optical CDs and requiring a login for that, but this has nothing to do with CDs.

Here are some relavent logs:

Let me know if there's any other information I can gather to help figure out what is causing this issue.

I thank you for any light you can shed on the situation!

I really expected a "What happens when you do this".. or.. at the very least a simple explanation "Oh, something's trying to mount and thus needs admin privileges".

...Yet nothing?

Little disappointing with the lack of support I receive on a Mac, I figured for the price tag of these guys you'd at least get stellar support from either apple or the communicty when the inevitable happens..

Looks like I'll keep trolling through logs and trying to diff what I can to figure out what's going on here...

Thx for the feedback! I really don't think this could be the issue though, as only a selet group of people get the dialog throughout the day. It seems like it would be either everyone or a single person that this would effect.

I did try a system_profiler > log.txt when the dialog popped up. Then did the same after giving the dialog the admin credentials. I did this to try to see what (if anything) had actually changed/happened. The wierd part is, the only different when compared was that the overall available size on the HD went UP??

Very odd in my mind. I could see available space going down, just as a side effect of things like cookies/temp files etc. Yet to go up, without input/clearing/closing of any kind by the user..

May 29, 2014 6:07 AM in response to BDAqua

It is very strange, intermittent, and only effects some users on the network. So extremely hard to diagnose where the problem is actually coming from..

I have looked through some logs but can't see anything that would require admin login.

I wish there was a way to figure out WHY an admin login has appeared on your screen prior to or after giving it permission...

Mac OS X 10.4: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password...

Mac OS X 10.4 Help, I forgot a password in my Keychain

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1960.html

Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...

If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

Thanks for the info, this was one of the first things I tried, sorry forgetting to mention that. The only thing that I have found that stops the dialog completely is if I use this command in terminal to stop SystemUIServer from loading the top right menubar:

launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.Kerberos.renew.plist

The dialog is gone, but so is my right side menu bar lol. So I reloaded that to test, and it came right back. So I pulled all the menubar extras from loading with a com.apple.SystemUIServer.plist like so:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple/DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>dontAutoLoad</key>

<array>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/AirPort.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Battery.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Bluetooth.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Clock.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Displays.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Eject.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/ExpressCard.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Fax.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/HomeSync.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/iChat.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/ink.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/IrDA.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/PPP.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/PPPoE.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Script Menu.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Spaces.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Sync.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/TextInput.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/TimeMachine.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/UniversalAccess.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/User.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Volume.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/VPN.menu</string>

<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/WWMAN.menu</string>

</array>

</dict>

</plist>

Now the only thing that remained was Spotlight's Magnifier. Yet the dialog reappeared, so I disabled Spotlight like so:

sudo mv /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle.bak

killall SystemUIServer

Now nothing appeared to load in the SystemUIServer Top-Right MenuBar. Yet the dialog again showed. So it's obviously SystemUIServer loading and trying to mount/get permission to do something but I can't tell what with everything supposedly not loading??

MDAqua you are very kind for at least offering suggestions, more than most on here... seems everyone's a guru until someone has a real question that can't be solved with "Insert recovery disk, or Disk Utility - Fix Permissions" 😝

I solved it without the help of a MAC Genius though 🙂

I got thinking about the fact that it was trying to mount something, that would probably be visibile on the SystemUIServer menu bar, and it was intermittent? So I thought updates! Browser updates at that!

So after digging through a little bit of different browser BS, I turned off chrome updates.... BAM no more admin login requests.

To test I turned it back on, and logged back in, BAM, admin login request...
