Q: Quicktime playing with dropframes
Dear friends, VJ's and video creators,
I found something realy strange while playing some movies with quicktime player on my macbookpro, and lots of other machines with different caracteritics and different OS.
It seams that during the playback of the movies, the graphic card is not able to play all the frames. Or maybe the OS gives orders to the graphic card to refresh parameters. But this occurs dropped frames. Dropped frames that nobody sees but I (and you too soon)
In most of the cases and with standards movies (with action, landscapes, humans, and evrything that can happen in usual movie) nobody can see this dropframe problem.
But...in some specific cases and specific movies like the one I did this week, the dropframe problem can be seen.
Precisions :
I did a new movie this week for an Opera playing in Paris. This is a live movie show and I'm projecting my movies with the macbookpro and a projection software.
This movie is a very precise animation with a constant move of objects. you will find a link down this page to see it and try if goes the same on your machine.
while playing the movie full size with quicktime, you will see some dropped frames occuring every 4 or 8 seconds (it's not constant).
These droped frames are not part of the movie I can swear it.
Each time you play the movie again, the dropped frames are not happening at the same moment of the movie.
try it and tell why these dropped frames are happening. thank you.
Also, another thing you can play with is the brighness of the macbookpro during the movie play.
while the movie is playing, try to ajust the brighness, you will see that each time the brighness icon disapears dropped frames happen. As if the graphics card was not able to play the movie and the icon animation at the same time without occuring dropped frames.
Here is the link:
Please dowload it (playing in web streaming is not good to see the problem) and play it full screen in quicktime player on a macbookpro.
pay very attention because the effect is not so big, but I did a very big projection on the big screen in my opera and the effect was very convincing.
I tried it with several machines and it was allways the same problem.
Macbookpro 2011 8Go AMD Radeon HD 6750M, 1024 MB
Macbookpro half -2012 8Go NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, 512 Mo
This year macbook pro with 2Go graphics card.
Please try this and tell me how I can get rid of these dropped frames to correctly project my movies during the opera with my macbookpro.
Christophe.
