My VX-2000 won't play tapes or record !!!! Have wedding tomorrow !!! HELP

This happened a while back and swapping the tapes a few times fixed it. I get no timecode on a full tape in VCR mode, and in camera mode when I hit RECORD the timecode rolls but then goes blank (--:--) when I stop recording.
It is a Sony VX-2000, 5 years old. Is this something I can fix or I should I send it to Sony? Thank You for any help.

Dual 1ghz G4, Mac OS X (10.3.9), FCP 3&4, DVDSP 2, Sony VX-2000

BTW, if you do get the camera fixed don't be an idiot like me and blow your cams fw ports by plugging while the cam is on or the cable is attatched to a hd. After 2 years of doing that and wondering why they say not to plug and unplug while the devices are on, a Panther weary LaCie drive managed to blow my deck and VX2K ports the same day. So now I have $1k and $2k JVC & Sony analog vcrs.

This is puzzling. Several people say that Firewire is not hot swappable in their (bitter) experience, as did an Internet site I visited a couple of years ago, devoted to such things (I have forgotten its address). On the other hand, many people (including me) regularly hot swap peripherals via firewire with (in my case) the camera on, and often connected to its external power supply. Wikipedia, Webopedia, and Apple:

http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/firewire/index.html

state that FW is hot swappable. Th emanual for me camcorder does not mention hot swapping.
