System Image Utility: NetInstall creation failed

Hi all,

I'm trying to create a NetRestore image. I'm doing this in 10.6.8 Server. I have a .dmg file which is a clone of the "template" hard drive I set up. When I create the NetRestore image, it tells me there's no room left on the device. I'm doing it on a machine with over 350GB of disk space left, so I'm not sure how much space it thinks it needs. below is the output. The dmg file is 49.1GB and contains a disk with a capacity of 159.7GB (110.6GB used). Below is the output. Any ideas? Thanks much!

Jeff

A debug log will give you much more complete information but, it appears that it's failing trying to move the asr image (System.dmg) into the shell image (NetInstall.dmg).

As I recall, on Snow Leopard, the OS is installed to the shell image. So, the combination of the OS + System.dmg has gotten larger than the space that was determined necessary for the creation of the shell disk image.

In other words, if I interpreted your description correctly, System.dmg is 49.1GB. If you mount NetInstall.dmg, it will have less than 49.1GB available on it.

I've seen this happen when the filesystem compression (somehow) gets disabled, causing the installed system to be larger than expected.

I'm getting the same/similar building a 10.10 NetRestore image. How does one get compression to be nice and reliable?

Or is there something else I'm missing? I installed 10.10 and 10.10 server/tools the same day, so should be in sync, right? I'm using a procedure I've done successfully for a long time with Mavericks. Any suggestions, of course, are welcome.

I actually have the exact same issue. I tried to capture an image of a Macbook Air onto my server and no matter what i did i got hte same result you did.

I finally got it to work by re-creating the image on a macbook pro (2010 model via firewire/target mode/without an SSD) and it worked. I found that capturing an image of a mac with an SSD always seemed to be problematic for SIU, but once i tired to capture the same image from an older macbook pro, it always worked.

I really do hope they fix this issue soon, its been on-going far too long.
