I put a blank disc in and it turns and makes noises and then the MB spits it back out with no error message. Does anyone have any thoughts? It worked fine a few weeks ago and I do not use it much, maybe once in a while to burn a CD and thats what I was going to do this time.

Some brands of CD's work better than others in a Mac. Verbatim seems to have the best reputation.
It could be just a dirty lens. Try a lens cleaning DVD, a few shots of compressed air into the slot or wrap a clean microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth?) around a business card and gently insert it into the slot.

I don't know. I have used the same Sony discs all of the other times. I guess it must need a cleaning.
If a lens cleaning fails to restore functionality, then make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar. The evaluation and diagnosis will be free. I hope then that the drive has not expired.

FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR INTERNAL SUPERDRIVE
This might help. If you haven't done so yet, try installing Apple's SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0, which is on Apple's support site at http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201953 to see if that resolves it. Apple says "This update addresses noise made by the optical disk drive during wake from sleep on your Mac." Although not related to what Apple mentions, the firmware update seems to be important for making external SuperDrives work in Yosemite, and it is one step I used to get my SuperDrive to work in a USB external case when plugged into my MacBook Pro.
Please let us know either way, whether the firmware update helps or not in your situation.
