I have read the directions for moving a project to an external hard drive but all depend on a view of the event library with a hard drive icon. I cannot find the icon any where. My external hard drive is in the correct Mac format.

In iMovie 9 you should indeed see an icon representing your external drive but if you are using iMovie 10 you have to either to first create a library on the hard drive then move events and projects over from within iMovie OR move the library wit the the finder. In the second case you have to open the moved library Using File - Open Library - Other and navigate to the new library location since iMovie doesn't yet know of its existance.
Before moving the library with the Finder way it is advisable to 'consolidate media' for that library to ensure that no links to external media will be broken. See:
