Q: I can't quit mail to finish update

I tried to restart but received info I have to quit mail so I did but still open and now I can't receive or send any mails it looks like suspended. I can't restart or shut down is always info i have to qit mail first.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

Force Quit .

Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time for 3 seconds. Wait.

When Force Quit window appears, select Mail, if not already.
Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window. Wait.

Application will quit.

Restart.
