With no command or help from me my Contacts/Address Book has decided to produce duplicate cards. In one case over 100 for a contact I haven't used in 10 months. Why /how does this occur? How can I quickly rid myself of the 100's of extra cards?

If you have duplicates in your Contacts application it may be due to one of the two causes related in this article -
