Q: Can I upgrade FCE4 to FC7, and use on 10.9

I have Final Cut Express 4 still in the box, never opened and wanted to know if there is a upgrade policy for the full version?

And where can I find the latest upgrade for Express 4 version to use with 10.9?

Thanks

Final Cut Express (FCE) was discontinued by Apple in June of 2011.  You have the latest version that was available (although the may be some updates to get you to version 4.0.3 online).  There was never an upgrade available from FCE to Final Cut Pro.

FCP-X replace FCE and the legacy Final Cut Pro (which was also discintinued in 2011) and is available for download from the App Store.  I believe the cost is $299.00 (USD).

Do you know if the latest FCE will work with 10.9.3?    Is there that much of a difference between FCE and FCP?  Thanks

There have been various anecdotal reports - some say it works, some say it partially works, and some say it does not. You are venturing into uncharted (and unsupported) waters.

Is there that much of a difference between FCE and FCP?

There is a tremendous difference, as FCP add professional functionality with broader format support. But both FCE and FCP have been abandoned by Apple, and are very much out of date.

Unless you have previous experience with FCE and legacy projects you want to work on, you would be much better off moving to a more modern editing platform such as FCP-X or Adobe Premiere Pro. Both those applications support modern operating systems, hardware, and media formats. And most importantly, both are being updated and improved as the computer/production world changes.

One more note - if you find a copy of full legitimate copy of FCP (Apple no longer sells it) on eBay, it is likely to be much more expensive than FCP-X.
