Q: after upgrading to Mavericks TrendMicro UIMgmt appears at startup

After recently upgrading to OSX Mavericks, my Mac has slowed down at startup.

I followed the instructions given to a user having a similar problem and uninstalled some unnecessary software.  However, the problem is not resolved.

The major culprit seems to be a reappearance of TrendMicro Smart Surfing for Mac, which I previously installed but then removed (incorrectly).

I thought I had fixed this problem before I upgraded to OSX Mavericks.  Whatever I did to fix it seemed to work, as TrendMicro stopped interfering with my Mac until now.

After waiting an inordinate amount of time at startup, I get an (error message) box saying  "UIMgmt wants to make changes."  Then it asks me to enter my password to allow it.

I have searched the web for solutions and tried a few (entering commands using the Terminal Console).  Nothing is working.  There is no visible application for TrendMicro in my Applications folder.

Thank you.

Uninstall the Trend Micro product by following the instructions on whichever of the pages linked below is applicable:

Removing Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security

    Uninstalling Trend Micro Smart Surfing

Restart. If the program was incompletely removed, reinstall it and start over. Back up all data before making any changes.

Thank you very much for your quick response.

The applicable link is the second one (Trend Micro Smart Surfing).  However, I cannot uninstall it using any of the options given.

Option 1 does not work because the application is no longer in my folder, and the Smart Surfing icon does not appear in the Notifications area at any point when I am able to click on it.  It is visible only when the system is starting up and as the UIMgmt message box appears, but can't be clicked at that point.

I also cannot reinstall the software.  I do not have the application in my folder, and the physical CD/ROM is gone (plus I don't have a drive).

Following instructions given to another user with a similar problem, I tried entering some commands using the Terminal Console to stop the Client Processes and delete all TM Security files, but they did not work.

I also attempted to remove the launch daemon, 'com.trendmicro.itis.icore.agent.plist', but that did not work, either.  I may have entered the commands incorrectly.

    Any other ideas?

There is no option available to download, and reinstall Trend Micro Smart Surfing for Mac.  This option is not available at the link you supplied.  The software is not available to download and install from anywhere on the Trend Micro site.

Following is the error message I'm receiving after start up.  Note the greyed-out Trend Micro icon at the top (in the Notifications area) that is not clickable:

    Screen Shot 2014-05-23 at 11.01.18 PM.png

I tried to erase the launch daemon (com.trendmicro.itis.icore.agent.plist) and launch agent (com.trendmicro.itis.loginmgr.agent.plist) by dragging and dropping the files from the Library list into the trash.  No success.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.

    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.

☞ Paste into the window of another application.

☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.

    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.

    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.

    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter

    exec bash

and press return. Then paste the script again.

    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line

    [Process completed]

to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.

    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Thank you, Linc.  I have run the test.  The results follow.

In the meantime, I wanted to make a note of a few other suggested solutions I found on the web and tried, for anyone reading this thread who has the same problem.

The steps I took to erase the Launch Daemon and Launch Agent for TrendMicro (noted in my last reply) succeeded in erasing these files.  (I discovered this by running Etrecheck again).  However, these steps did not stop the start up box from appearing.

I also tried another suggested solution I found on the web:  Going into the Login Items, finding the Trend Micro start up application, and hiding it at startup.  This did not work.

(Steps:  From Finder, select Applications, then System Preferences, Users and Groups, click Login Items, click TMLoginMgr, click the lock to make changes, type in password, click the lock again.

There is still a file showing up called iCoreService located within StartupItems that needs to be eliminated.

Instructions for manually uninstalling TrendMicro Security software appeared to address a common problem with the TrendMicro product I had ( which is Smart Surfing for Mac).

They are found on the TrendMicro website at this link http://esupport.trendmicro.com/pages/Manually-uninstalling-Trend-Micro-Security- for-Mac-client-in-Worry-Free-Business-Security-WFBS-70.aspx.  The instructions involve two steps:

    1.  Stop the Trend Micro Security client processes

    2.  Delete all Trend Micro Security client files

Although this solution applies to a different TM application, the offending filename was the same (iCoreService).  I thought this could resolve the problem, but it didn't work.  The error message I received was "command not found".

I am looking for instructions on how to delete the startup item, iCoreService, shown in the test above under Startup Items (  /Library/StartupItems/iCoreService/StartupParameters.plist), which appears to be the only remaining junk left on my Mac from Trend Micro.

BTW, I have followed these commonly referred to steps to both hide the item from appearing at startup, and delete it from the startup list:

    http://www.gilsmethod.com/how-to-control-startup-applications-in-mac-os

However, when I run Etrecheck, I can still see the file on my computer, and I want it gone.  I don't know how to get rid of it.

Download and run Find Any File to search for a file.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.  Once found you can drag the file from the search results window to the Desktop and then to the Trash bin.

Since there appears to be only one Startup Item, navigate to /Library/StartupItems/ and drag the iCoreService folder to the Desktop, or directly to the Trash.

To do that select the following line (triple-click to select the entire line) then control-click or two-finger tap the selection.

    /Library/StartupItems/

In the contextual menu that appears, select Services > Open. Drag the entire iCoreService folder out of StartupItems, then restart your Mac. iCoreService should no longer be active.

You should also remove Kaspersky's "anti-virus" products. You may encounter similar difficulties since it does not appear to have been updated for Mavericks compatibility:

As far as I know you must install Kaspersky to be able to use its uninstaller. The problem is that when I attempted to install Kaspersky's product on a Mavericks system, their installer failed, which may leave you in an untenable situation:

The benefit of any "anti-virus" product that fails to perform such a fundamental task as keeping abreast of OS X upgrades that have been in their hands for nearly a year is questionable at best.

You also might try un-installing Kapersky.

    A.

    Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /Library/StartupItems/iCoreService

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

    Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    B. (optional, but recommended)

Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. The product includes a Safari extension that may not be removed by the uninstaller.

Thank you for your response, OT.  I'd like to avoid downloading another product, but will keep this in mind, as I find Spotlight difficult to use.  It should not be so difficult to locate files in the Library.
