i want to stop using my phone number with imessage, i cant because it is greyed out and its selected but i want to deselect it but i cant.
when i take my sim out it completely disables imessage

Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > START NEW CONVERSATIONS FROM: deselect phone number and select e-mail address.
i know, i did unselect my phone number but it's still greyed out (the phone number) buton my iPod touch 4th geni i can unselect it.

i meant i can slect/deselect wheather i want my phone number to be used (only on my ipod not my iphone)
To remove a phone number from an Apple ID, sign out of FaceTime and Messages on your iPhone:
