Q: Have restarted my iMac from original discs but can not access Lion

My early 2008 iMac's start up disc was full and I decided to wipe it and start again.  Backed up to AirPort Time Capsule and restarted the computer with the original Mac OS X Install Disc 1, I then put the OS X Snow Leopard disc in and installed it. Installed the iWork '08 disc and then the iLife'09 CPU Drip-In DVD that came with the computer.  I can not access iTunes downloads to retrieve OS X Lion & OS X Mountain Lion that I have previously purchased.

Which version of Snow Leopard is your install disk? Have you updated it to 10.6.8? You cannot access the app store to get Lion or ML unless you have 10.6.8 installed.

Go to  > Software Update, and install the 10.6.8 update. You should then have the App Store, in which later versions of OS X you've purchased should appear under the "Purchased" tab.

In order to do that you must use the App Store, not the iTunes Store. To access the App Store you must have 10.6.6 or later installed.

    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

    Upgrading to Lion

If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.

You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

         Lion System Requirements

           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,

               or Xeon processor

           2. 2GB of memory

           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)

           4. 7GB of available space

           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

    Upgrading to Mavericks

You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

    Upgrading to Mavericks

To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks

             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

Thanks, I have updated to 10.6.8 and accessed the App Store purchases I have made, but when I try to download OS X Lion, it says "The item you've requested is not currently available in the Australian Store". I wanted to upgrade to Mountain lion (where it was before I cleared it) as I am concerned that all the work on my time capsule may not be retrievable if I upgrade to OS X Mavericks?  I believe I would have to purchase Pages, Keynote, Numbers,iPhoto,iMovie & iDVD which would cost $131.94. Even if I do purchase all these things, will my old documents open in the new applications?

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion

To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

You can no longer obtain Lion or Mountain Lion via the App Store unless you find them on your Purchases page in App Store.
