Q: My iMac will not connect to the internet

I have a 21.5inch 2013 iMac. Yesterday I was unable to connect to the internet and the problem persists today.

 

It states that I am connected to wifi with full signal and my other devices such as my iPad, iPod and windows laptop are connected and working, so it is not a problem with my internet service provider.

 

I have tried Network Diagnostics, have restarted my router and computer several times, and have tried removing all preferred networks from my iMac and reconnecting.

 

If some suggestions or advice can be provided it would be much appreciated as I need it working again urgently.

    Have you tried a setup with an Ethernet cable, to get it online, then check all the

    System Preference> Network settings to be sure they are in the correct order as

    you re-set it over to attempt to connect via Wi-Fi?

     

    If you have tried the option to 'join other network' and enter your own network

    name/password, that sometimes will work; then have it set to remember those

    networks you've visited. And follow that up with having it set to not join networks

    automatically, since most outside ones would be secure or private anyway. At

    least then any suggestion from those others nearby not of your own, would not

    appear to be viable (good signal strength, but not open, etc) & so less clutter.

    Thanks very much for the quick reply!

     

    I have now tried connecting via Ethernet cable and the internet loads quickly as usual. However, when I unplug and reconnect via wifi it does not load at all, and moving the router to use it wired is not an option.

     

    I have tried the 'join other network' option, turning off my iMac and router for a longer time (roughly 30 minutes), and the suggested solutions in the link you sent me, but to no avail.

     

    I did notice that when connecting via cable my IP address is different to my IP address when connecting over wifi. Every time I reconnect via wifi it returns to the same IP address. I don't know much about IP addresses so I'm not sure if this is unrelated, or normal, but do you think this could be something to do with it? Can the IP address become 'stuck' and prevent me using the internet?

     

    I cannot connect to any other wifi to test if it's solely an issue when connecting to my wifi because there aren't any unprotected networks within range.

    Currently:

    IPv4 configuration: DHCP

    IPv4: 192.168.1.64

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

    Router: 192.168.1.254

    No. My wifi status is connected, with a green icon, and full wifi signal, but when I open safari and try to load a page there's a 10 second delay, followed by a blank, white screen for around a minute, then it says it cannot connect because my iMac isn't connected to the internet. This happens even though my network preferences still show that my iMac is connected. Any ideas?

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Thanks for the information. The problem persisted in safe mode, just as before. It also persists now, having rebooted it after starting up in safe mode. Does this mean it's something serious?

    Start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.

     

    Test. After testing, restart as usual and post the results.

    There was the same problem. The blue loading bar in the web address bar gets only a small fraction of the way, then stops and doesn't load any of the page. The problem remains after restarting normally.

    I have reset the PRAM and the SMC and the problems still remains. Any recommendations for what I should try next?

    I just managed to connect to a BT Openzone wifi source, and therefore got a different IP. The page took around 10 minutes to load, and didn't load properly; it was just a standard font page, not properly formatted, without images or anything requiring more download. So the problem is that the internet is loading VERY VERY slowly if I'm VERY lucky, or not at all.

     

    Any further advice would be much appreciated, I'm quite desperate now!
