Q: iTunes on External Drive, and Podcasts.

Hey guys, my Mac’s HD is really full. One of the reasons for this is my iTunes, which is taking up 95gb (including Podcasts, Music, Apps).

I use it to sync my iPhone/iPad. It stores Media obviously (30gb maybe), but the majority of the space it takes is Apps, and (recently) Podcasts.

1. Is it possible to move my iTunes folder to the attached Drive, and Sync wirelessly? How?

2. If I do that, how will I Sync my devices when I am not near the Hard Drive?

3. If I am away from that hard drive, and buy a new song/app (Via itunes or a device), how will that work?

4. Will doing so ruin my iPhoto experience or cause frustration with my devices?

Also...

With Podcasts:

  1. I have the “Podcasts” app on iPhone and iPad, as well as via iTunes. I recently went from 5 stations which updated weekly, to 65. Now I have 15gb of podcasts, and they seem to be in 3 locations. This is not what I wanted. I wanted to subscribe, and check for episodes when I felt like listening. I don’t mind being notified that a new podcast is available, or for it to show up as a link automatically, but is there any way to turn off the actual download until I try to listen to it?
  2. I’d also like to sync those settings across all devices, and for episodes to be deleted from ALL Devices when I choose to (I don’t want to automatically delete, because if a particular podcast is very informative or entertaining, I’d like to keep it). How do I set that up?

Any Help, even with only one of these subjects, would be much appreciated.

    1) Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.

    2) If you can't connect to the hard drive then obviously you won't have you library and won't be able to sync or even play any media.  It will be on the hard drive which is somewhere else.

    3) You can transfer purchases from i-device to computer when you next sync.  In most cases you can  re-download past purchases from the Store to your computer when you next attach to the library.  You can also set it up to do this automatically if you wish.

iTunes Store: How to enable Automatic Downloads - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4539 - "iTunes 10.3 3 and iOS 4.3.3 or later (iOS 5 or later for iPhone (CDMA Model)) enable you to automatically download purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, or iTunes Store instantly to your other computers and devices."  Some items can only be downloaded once (e.g., audiobooks, ringtones, some movies) and you will have to transfer them from the device to which they were originally downloaded.

    4) It shouldn't.
