Q: My Macbook Pro is running slowly

Hi all

My Macbook Pro has slowed down drastically. I have switched it off and on again, and freed up hard drive space but while it may run quickly for a few hours, eventually it slows down again (while maintaining hard drive space).

I have done an etrecheck as per a previous thread I read. Details are below:

That looks like a pretty clean and lean system, now. Did you reboot after getting rid of VirtualBox? Any speed increases?

If there are no notable speed differences, you may want to check out the 'health' of your internal hard drive. Boot into your Recovery Partition (hold down the command and R keys whilst booting) and, once at your Recovery screen:

    OSXRecoveryMenu.png

...select Disk Utility and then highlight the name of your boot volume (Macintosh HD) and click on the Verify button at the bottom left. If the output text is green and telling you that everything appears to be OK, then your hard drive should be fine. If, however, you get red text telling you that the drive needs to be repaired, select Macintosh HD again and click on the Repair button. You'll either get a message in green text telling you that the drive has been repaired or red text telling you that the drive cannot be repaired.

Call back with results. You can access Safari from the Recovery screen (just remember or write down your Apple ID and password!).

    Good luck,

    Clinton

    Hi Tom,

"Wondering (after removing ESET) if there is any anti-virus software that can be used with Macs? Is it necessary".

No, it is not necessary. But if you want to feel safe there were two av that did not harm: Sophos and ClamXav, although Sophos can be troublesome lately with 10.9. If you want to use them, use only for a manual scan, not 'on access'; start them manually and quit after the scan.

    Waiting for your hosts etc.

Wondering (after removing ESET) if there is any anti-virus software that can be used with Macs? Is it necessary?

There are tons of software apps available for use with Macs and sometimes Macs do get malware but seldom actual viruses. See The Safe Mac's -> Mac Malware Guide.

In the Mac world, the more you pay for AV software, the more it can trash your system. ClamXav is pretty good (donation-ware) but read Thomas's recommendations at The Safe Mac before you BUY anything - it's just not needed.

So, yes, there's a boatload of AV software out there for Macs but the more you pay, the worse it can be for your overall Mac stabilization.

    Hi Lex & Clinton

    My Hosts data :

    ##

    # Host Database

    #

    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.

    ##

    127.0.0.1          localhost

    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost

    ::1             localhost

    fe80::1%lo0          localhost

    127.0.0.1 cp47346.edgefcs.net

    127.0.0.1 cp39465.edgefcs.net

    127.0.0.1 hulufs.fplive.net

Computer is running much faster now in any case!

Good, the  edgefcs  and  hulufs  were either hacked by the sender (torrent, probably) or by you with a keygenerator.

No harm done, when everything that has to do with it is removed from your system.

    Download Textwrangler: http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/

Then use it to open the hosts file, and remove the last three lines (after: fe80::1%lo0      localhost ), then save the file, quit textwrangler, go out of the /etc/ folder, start DiskUtility and 'repair permissions' (although Textwrangler does not change the permissions --thank you Thomas Reed-- but you never know.).

We are ready I think, use your mac and have fun.

ps, i had to edit this post twice, thanks to the Thai drinks, i am going to stop now, will be back tomorrow.

Haha, all I know of thai drinks is chang beer - gives you a "changover"!

I've run the textwrangler software and repaired disk permissions. Everything seems to be running fine. If there are any issues I'll post a new thread.

    Thanks

You have shortage of Ram as the MBP is now.

But that may be gone after cleaning and uninstalling what you really do not need.

    1. First be sure that you have an adequate backup strategy (sometimes I forget to say the obviuos).

    2. Then I have to discuss the hacked software: you used a keygenerator to generate a key for some softwares, and you may also have downloaded hacked software with a Torrent app; this is "illegal" in some countries, but the disadvantage of this is that there maybe all kinds of malware build in in those softwares, so that you do not know what is causing issues. Also Torrent apps broadcast a lot about your system and you, and you probably do not want that.

So first of all uninstall the key generator, and the torrent app when you still have it.

Do not edit the hosts file before you have uninstalled every trace of the hacked software: because that may bring you in serious trouble...

I am against this method of getting software.

Contemplate whether you want to uninstall those softwares, and use alternatives when you need these (for example Gimp instead of Photoshop).

    3. What certainly will help you now is removing all entries in

    SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems

    with the minus sign underneath.

And after that starting apps you want to run by hand and quit by hand after use.

    RESTART the Mac after this.

    4. Also uninstall software that you do not really need (imho):

    Google Notifier, Magicmenu.

    5. I am not familiar with Apogee Duet, but I am not really happy with software that installs entries deep in the OSX folders.

    You can find alternatives probably.

See how it is after this,

    Lex

Hello, I'm not sure how to start a new question so hope you will accept this message.  My MacBook is running slowly and I keep getting held up by the coloured wheel going round and round ad infinitum it feels.  Please could I send you my EtreCheck report?  Thank you in hopefulness.  Sukicaan
