Parallels is a good solution if you want to be able to run your Windows software at the same time as other Mac applications.

Another solution would be Boot Camp, which reboots the entire Mac into Windows, but the disadvantage is that no Mac programs can be run since it makes the entire Mac work like a Windows PC.

Before you buy Parallels, you might consider similar alternatives. A competitor to Parallels is VMWare Fusion, and another alternative is VirtualBox which is free.

But whichever alternative you pick, you will need a legitimate Windows license to be able to install Windows. All those products to is allow you to run Windows, but they don't include Windows itself (unless they say they do).

If you use the virtualization applications like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox there is little effect on your OS in the long run. They are just applications, and the Windows installation is self-contained inside a Parallels document. For example, you run the Parallels application and then you open the document containing the entire Windows installation. I have multiple versions of Windows on my Mac (Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 8). In Parallels I can open any of those, or I can open all of them. If I run all of them, they appear as different document windows inside Parallels. Because they work this way, they don't affect other Mac applications or documents or the OS.

If you used the Boot Camp option, the Windows installation would be stored on a separate drive partition from OS X, so that wouldn't affect your Mac system either.
