May 25, 2014 10:28 AM in response to Geraldob263by BDAqua,Hi, this has worked for a few...
Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
Click OK.

May 25, 2014 1:26 PM in response to BDAquaby Geraldob263,It seems you don't understand the problem I'm having, but thank you for that anyway.
I have other computers that use the same connection just fine.
With the trouble powerbook G4 it doesn't matter if I get on the internet via Wi-Fi or if I plug in the eathernet cable directly. Shortly there after I get the spining ball and Safari freezes. Even if I have nothing open and I connect to the internet then I cannot open anything.
Reboot. Turn off the connection. And if I didn't wait to long all works well. Just cannot connect and expect anything to work.

May 25, 2014 2:00 PM in response to Geraldob263by BDAqua,I guess I'm still not seeing it clearly, does it freeze without any browser or Mail app open?
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & the Startup right after that for clues.
click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v
A couple dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

May 25, 2014 6:36 PM in response to BDAquaby Geraldob263,Yes. It freezes up soon after it sees the internet connection and it starts working. I wondered so I looked for signs of activity from the modem LED's but saw none. And again this happens whether any programs are opened or even if none are opened.
With theinternet off all seems to be okay. Then shortly after plugging in the internet, it freezes. I connected via my wi-fi. Then the free one from the RV park, and also from the ethernet cable that come from the modem to my airport wirelss rotor.
All my other computers have no problem.
I really appreciate you responding ang I will do as you have suggested as soon as I get back home. You see I have left for the week end which includes Monday. I will be home sometime tommorrow. I left that computer there.
Sorry, and thanks again.

May 27, 2014 3:59 PM in response to Geraldob263by Geraldob263,I practiced this a few times, and as I did I noticed that the clock in the menu bar stops. Then shortly there-after the spinning ball appears. And of course all is locked up.
Here it is.

May 27, 2014 4:46 PM in response to Geraldob263by BDAqua,OK, 1st see if this reducees the errors...
System Preferences>Sharing>Computer Name, rename it & be sure not to use any spaces or strange characters.
Also disable Screen Sharing & maybe all Sharing Services there for a test.

May 27, 2014 7:02 PM in response to Geraldob263by BDAqua,Did you disable all Sharing in the Sharing Pref Pane?
Also...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.

May 28, 2014 10:40 AM in response to Geraldob263by BDAqua,Whew, I think it's deeper than this, but in System Preferences>Date & Time, uncheck Set date & time automatically, any change?

May 28, 2014 5:54 PM in response to Geraldob263by Geraldob263,I tried what you suggested and it didn't help.
I think I recall being instructed once by
Apple tech support to drag the system file to the trash, rboot and try it all again. Does that sound right?
-
May 28, 2014 6:41 PM in response to Geraldob263by BDAqua,No, not at all, but which system file might this be? Was that in OS9 days?
-
May 28, 2014 7:10 PM in response to BDAquaby Geraldob263,No. Not that long ago. And I ment an entire folder. I'm not certain I'm recalling correctly. Maybe it was some other folder. Whichever it was it was one that rebuilds itself fresh.
Ring any bells?
