More Crashing iTunes 11.2.1!!! Thoroughly Broken!

After rev 11.2.1 iTunes stalls on "Determining Gapless Playback". Worse, uses 100% CPU with whirlyball and fills all available HD space with....What? Had 9G availble, after less than a minute- got the the "not enough room on start-up disc" message. So- freed up 18G space, still fills it up!. Can't delete and reinstall iTunes as iTunes is a"part of OSX"- won't let me. Shut off Genius Mix and Internet, that seems to permit iTunes to start and even commence playing a file but soon enough, whiurly ball and "Determining Gapless Playback" freezes. Obviously, iTunes and my media library are unusable and so is my Macbbook if I should try to use iTunes! Broke my stuff!

Ran Permissions Repair and Drive Genius. Shows thousands of errors in iTunes, only a hundred or so other. Disc space comes back after restart.

Maybe unrelated- podcasts lists don't scroll smoothly- worst, but scrolling from touch pad is really jerky now. Whirly ball appears on most every app.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

FOUND WORKAROUND! Not a solution, but at least now I can use iTunes. Went to the Genius Bar and a boot from Network was done, kind of like Davis' suggestion. trashed iTunes, and Safari 3rd party plug ins, p-lists. I myself could not do this because can't trash iTunes from the startup disk. Had to download iTunes with

Firefox- Safari would go directly to the "Thank you for downloading" screen without actually downloading. After re-installing iTunes it wanted to stall again first on Genius upload to Apple but now I could switch it off, no Whirlyball. Then it wanted to stall on "Determine Gapless Playback" . Found the worst of this was due MP3 files that were audio books but were in the "Songs" folder. I was shown how to re-classify these audio files as Audio books- now they don't jam up the "Gapless Playback". Re-started and iTunes ran ok! Memory not filling up! "Gapless Playback" runs quickly and no whirlyball. Genius mix still takes long time- (because p-lists trashed?) have not allowed it to complete and will just turn it off I guess. The "Gapless Playback" is still refigured each time anything is added to library- it appears to be MP3 files that are involved and am attempting to convert to AAC, one by one but the Audio Books were the worst culprit.

Podcasts are still an issue. Previous Revision level they would update ok, but now "Refresh All" results in whirlyball freeze. Have to refresh each podcast one by one, episode by episode to avoid freeze.

Apple, this is not fixed. It is really a work-around. Thanks to the dilegence of your Genius Bar guy I am able to use my media again. But should I really have to fear this kind of thing at every revision release?
