Q: Server May not Exist error

Hi all,

I have a Synology NAS attached to my network. I recently had a power failure at my house, and now when trying to reconnect either of my macs (a mac mini and a macbook pro), I can no longer connect to the NAS. It shows up in my finder window, but when I try to access it, it says "There was a problem connecting to the server... The server may not exist or it is unavailable...."

I can connect to the server through my web browser, and it also shows up on my windows device. Any idea what I need to do to start browsing the directory on my macs again? I've tried rebooting both computers  and the NAS, and neither seems to work.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)

Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.

Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

    If it does contain data...

The only thing when I do that is a shortcut to my laptop harddrive. The NAS is showing up on the "shared" drives on the left hand sidebar, but doesn't show up when I do the /volumes thing.

    Hmmmm,

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any more clues or repeating messages when this happens.

This is what I get when I try and connect to it...looks like it can't find the devices IP address, buts a fixed ip on a local network. How do I check/change what address it's looking for?

Are there any other fixed IPs on the network?

Do you know the IP of the NAS? IP of the Mac?

I believe the NAS is the only thing that's fixed IPwise.

I can access the NAS's interface via the fixed IP in a web browser, and I see no IP conflict among the rest of the devices connected to my network.

And the first 3 numbers are the same as the problem Mac?

Let's say the NAS is 192.168.2.47

Computers would need to be 192.168.2.x to connect to it, except using a Browser that looks for any IP.

Ah. Yes, all devices on my network are 192.168.1.x of some different last digit.
