Troubleshooting iTunes installation on Mac OS X

Before you install

• Be sure that you have the administrator username and password available. You will need both to install iTunes.
• Make sure you have enough disk space. Even small applications may require a few hundred megabytes of space to complete the optimization phase of the installation.
• Check your hard disk before installing. You might want to use Disk Utility to verify that your disk is OK and that permissions are correct.
• Don't use your computer while installing an update. Though this isn't required, you may want to avoid using your computer during the update process. You may also want to restart the computer immediately before installing an update. If other applications are running, shut them down to maximize the amount of memory available for the installation.
• Find out what version of iTunes you currently have installed.
  1. Open iTunes.
  2. From the iTunes menu, choose About iTunes.
  3. A window appears with scrolling text. The first text that appears displays the iTunes version (press the space bar to freeze the text if it's moving too fast for you to read).

Download the latest installer

1. Open Safari or another web browser.
2. Go to the iTunes download webpage and click the Free Download button.
3. Make sure that the Mac OS X version is selected on that page.
4. Click the Download button to start the download.

Once the file is downloaded, a new Finder window appears containing two items (below). If a Finder window doesn't appear, locate the iTunesX.dmg file (where X is the iTunes version number) on the desktop (or wherever your downloads go) and double-click it to display these items:

• A "Read Before You Install iTunes" file. This document contains the system requirements for the version of iTunes, and may contain other useful information about installing.
  
  
• An iTunes.mpkg file (this is the installer file itself).

Install iTunes

1. Quit iTunes if it is currently open.
2. Double-click the iTunes.mpkg file. This opens the Installer application in Mac OS X.
3. Follow the instructions in the installer screens. If all of the installation components appear unchecked and dimmed (unavailable, and therefore not installable), refer to Mac OS X iTunes installer components are disabled.
4. After the installation has completed, quit the Installer and restart the computer. The new version of iTunes appears on your hard disk in your Applications folder.

Opening iTunes

It's possible that clicking the iTunes icon in your Dock or double-clicking an iTunes icon on your desktop could open an older version of iTunes. Open iTunes from the Applications folder to be sure you are opening the right version:

1. Double-click your hard disk.
2. Double-click the Applications folder.
3. Double-click the iTunes icon.

If you notice another copy of iTunes in the Dock after following these steps, here's a way to take care of that:

1. Quit iTunes.
2. Drag the iTunes icon out of the Dock.
3. Drag the iTunes icon from the Applications folder to the Dock.
