very. My rule of thumb, NEVER put anything in your checked luggage that you can't afford to lose.
In addition, have you ever seen how they toss those bags around? Never put anything breakable in checked luggage.
Carry your iPad on. To me there is no other option.

Also, jewelry and medications.
I have to agree with Skydiver119. checked luggage is very often manhandled or roughly treated. I always take my iPad on the plane with me. As the tossing coul cause it to crack
Besides what else are you going to to do, if your iPad is checked?
I use my iPad on the plain to play games (offline) and pass the time during flight.

Not only do they handle it roughly but you're trusting that the baggage handlers, TSA and others keep their sticky fingers out of your luggage. Stuff vanishes out of checked luggage all the time and there is zero recourse.
I had a suitcase of mine that once had its frame bent after having heavy stuff tossed on it.

On really long flights, I spring for the WiFi on the plane if available!
Yup me too. But since most of my travel is under 3 hours long, I just don't see the need.
