Q: Connectivity between MacPro and MacBook

I have a MacPro (bought in 2011) and have just bought a new MacBook Pro.

Is there any way I can connect the two so as to sync the work done during the day on my MacBook to the Pro?

the guy in the store sold me a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable and told me the MacBook would show as a drive in Finder but this didn't happen.

For a direct connection you would need to boot one of the computers into Target Disk Mode. Alternatively, if you have a home network just enable File Sharing on each computer. On each computer select the Macintosh HD icon on the Desktop. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. Check the box to enable Shared. You can now transfer data over the network in either direction.

Only late 2013 Mac Pro supports Thunderbolt.

A Thunderbolt cable will plug in to a mini display port so it sound like you did that.

Connect them to the same network and use file sharing

Your advisor needs to get some training on Apple computers older than this week. Mac Pro silver towers have no way to support ThunderBolt.

If you can get each computer onto the Internet without recabling, you have the infrastructure needed to support File Sharing over your network. No re-cabling is needed. Enable it in System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing
